At the end of June every year, the spectacular dragon boat races transform Almere's Esplanade into a mini-Taiwan. This year’s races took place on 19 June 2011.
Amsterdam inbusiness and the city of Almere (part of the Amsterdam Metropolitan Area) hosted the third dragon boat event on Almere's Esplanade.
The event opened in the morning with a special peace torch ceremony. In the afternoon, Taiwanese companies active in the Amsterdam Metropolitan Area participated in the race, followed by a garden party late afternoon, where people enjoyed traditional Taiwanese foods.
In addition to guest teams from Taiwanese companies, other corporate teams were present as well as racing teams from the Dutch Dragon Boat Federation. The day is regarded as an official race day in the federation’s national schedule.
The dragon boat race reflects the strong ties between the Amsterdam Metropolitan Area and Taiwan. More than 25% of Taiwanese companies in the Netherlands have located to the Amsterdam Metropolitan Area.
The Boat House in Almere became an honorary part of Asia when it hosted a Taiwanese seminar on 7 December 2010. More than 30 CEOs from Taiwanese companies active in the Amsterdam Metropolitan Area attended the seminar and dinner. They shared experiences and knowledge about expat affairs, safety and taxes.
