The corporate community in the Amsterdam Metropolitan Area actively supported the Dutch national day of action on 13 April, 2011 to raise funds to help victims of the tsunami and earthquake in Japan.
The Japanese ambassador to the Netherlands, His Excellency Mr Takashi Koezuka, the mayor of Amstelveen, Jan van Zanen, Secretary General of the Dutch Red Cross, Cees Breederveld, and the Managing Director of KLM Royal Dutch Airlines, Erik Varwijk, welcomed the Japanese football team Shimizu S-Pulse when they arrived at Amsterdam Airport Schiphol.
The team played a benefit match in the Amsterdam Arena against Ajax Amsterdam.
The aim of the event was to give an overwhelming show of support to those affected by the disaster in Japan and to raise funds for the Red Cross who are working in the area. The Red Cross also opened the Giro account number 6868 for people to make donations to the cause. The benefit evening at the Amsterdam ArenA raised over 6 million euros.
Corporations can contribute to the victims of the disaster and have done so in various ways. The Okura Hotel and Japanese restaurant in Amsterdam organised a fund-raising dinner which resulted in a donation of more than 200,000 euros, exceeding expectations.
KLM personnel raised money to help the victims of the earthquake and tsunami in Japan and offered a cheque to the Red Cross during the welcoming ceremony of the Japanese football team at Amsterdam Airport Schiphol.
