A global competition organised by BBC World News and Newsweek in association with Shell, the BBC World Challenge recognises and rewards individuals and small businesses from around the world that show enterprise and innovation in tackling environmental and social issues.
Nominations are open until 19 June 2011. If you would like to nominate a project please visit the World Challenge 2011 website.
In July 2011, World Challenge finalists will be announced and BBC World News will make a short documentary on each of the finalists to be broadcast within the World Challenge 2011 series. The winner will receive a grant of 20,000 US dollars and 10,000 US dollars will be awarded to two runners-up.
In 2010, Dutch inventor Auke Idzenga won the World Challenge. The aim of his project called “the only way is up” was to provide villagers in mountainous regions of the Philippines with clean drinking water by means of hydraulic ram pumps, which use the power of a river's flow to push water uphill without any other energy input.
The finale was held at Felix Meritus, the European centre for art, culture and science in downtown Amsterdam. Alderperson Carolien Gehrels attended the event and gave a short speech.
