Amsterdam more attractive for expats

Amsterdam has become more attractive for expats since the city became a less expensive place to live, according to new research by Mercer Consulting.

Most expensive cities

Amsterdam

Luanda in Angola is the world’s most expensive city for expatriates, according to the latest Cost of Living Survey from Mercer. Tokyo is in second place and the Chadian capital N'Djamena in third. Moscow (4), Geneva (5) and Zurich (joint 8) are the most expensive European cities.

London and Paris both rank 17th on the list which indicates that both cities are more expensive places to live in than Amsterdam.

Amsterdam appeal

Amsterdam continues to become more attractive for expats as the cost of living decreases. The city’s ranking on the list of most expensive cities to live in decreased to 35th in 2010. The Netherlands ranked 29th last year and 25th the year before.

However, competitive cost of living isn’t Amsterdam Metropolitan Area’s only charm. Recent research finds that the quality of life in the area is among the highest in the world. It is no surprise that many expats find it hard to leave once they have come here to work.

Cost of Living survey

Mercer looked at the cost of accommodation, transport, food, clothes and household supplies in 214 cities. New York is used as the base city for the index and currency movements are measured against the dollar.

The list is used to help multinational companies and governments determine compensation allowance for their expatriate employees.
