Eurocities Awards 2010

Amsterdam has been nominated for the Eurocities Awards 2010 (Successful Cities Vision and Identity) for their project “Free State of Amsterdam” in the “Participation” category.

Free State of Amsterdam

Eurocities in Amsterdam

Free State of Amsterdam was the Netherlands' contribution to the 4th International Architecture Biennale Rotterdam (IABR), whose theme was “Open City: designing Coexistence.”

It was an exhibition combined with a programme of narrative and debate about Amsterdam’s future. Residents and visitors were encouraged to join the discussion and share their thoughts.

The 2009 initiative “binnen30minuten.nl (denk mee over de toekomst van de stad!) - take 30 minutes (share your thoughts about the future of the city!”) – was also aimed at involving Amsterdam’s citizens in the formulation of a new structural vision for the future of the city.

The use of internet-accessible “social media” allowed the public to generate the content of a website; organisers solicited responses, coaxed ideas out into the open and gauged the mood of the city.

EUROCITIES

Eurocities is a network of major European cities that brings together local governments of more than 140 large cities in over 30 European countries. Each year Eurocities holds its annual conference in a different member city. Eurocities Awards are given to selected member cities in several categories.

This year, Amsterdam is on the short list for receiving a Eurocities Award in the “Participation” category. The award recognises successful activities which promote citizen participation.

Amsterdam Area: outstanding quality of life

The nomination illustrates the superb quality of life in the Amsterdam Metropolitan Area. In a recent Mercer Quality of Life Survey of cities worldwide, Amsterdam ranked among the top 20 cities. Amsterdam continues to score high compared to other European cities such as Brussels, Berlin, Paris and London.
