Amsterdam International Community School celebration

On 2 September 2010, the Amsterdam International Community School (AICS) officially opened a newly renovated section on the top floor of its building. The AICS is a member of the Esprit School Group, a rapidly growing Dutch International Primary and Secondary School in Amsterdam.

The opening ceremony attracted many guests. Alderman Carolien Gehrels and the principal of the AICS, Kees van Ruitenbeek, both gave a short speech. Part of the ceremony was the inauguration of the school’s Community Wall.

The Community Wall is a mosaic project students will work on throughout the school year. The mosaic will include the letters of the school, featured prominently. Alderman Carolien placed the letter “A” on the wall during the inauguration. A tour of the new school and new section was also included in the ceremony.

Amsterdam: international melting pot

The Amsterdam Metropolitan Area has been a magnet for many international companies and their staff. As a result, the demand for international education has been growing considerably in recent years. Many international schools in the Amsterdam Area are expanding or looking for new, larger premises.

The growing demand is reflected in the AICS: three years ago, there were 150 students at this school. With the opening of the new wing, 600 students between the ages of 4 and 19 can be accommodated.

Additional expansion

The new wing is a temporary solution. The principal of the school, Kees van Ruitenbeek, comments, “It is our ambition to ultimately move to the Zuidas area, just behind our current location in the south of Amsterdam. We intend to develop an even higher number of initiatives there, to share with even more students and organisations, and to combine high educational expectations and outcomes with a range of educational activities like meetings, lectures, workshops and visits in and around the Amsterdam Zuidas community”.

The quest for new premises for the school is being conducted in collaboration with the project bureau Zuidas, and with the support of amsterdam inbusiness.
