Quality of life
People from all over the world are attracted to the liveability and quality of life and excellent work-life balance found throughout the region. Amsterdam’s village-like charm is paired with a cosmopolitan vibe and cultural icons that can match any major European capital. It’s a successful combination: Amsterdam regularly ranks high in Mercer’s annual Quality of Living report, which assesses living conditions across ten categories. And in the OECD Better Life Index, a measure of well-being in countries across the world, the Netherlands is the top-scorer for work-life balance and scores above average for housing, education and skills, environmental quality and health status.
Because of Amsterdam’s attraction to internationals, the city has a multicultural vibe and there is a strong international community. In addition, the vast majority of Amsterdam residents speaks English. Services for the international community in Amsterdam, such as international schools and a dedicated Expatcenter, are excellent, helping newcomers feel at home after a short time.
Dutch children are amongst the happiest in the world, making Amsterdam a great place to raise a family. The city is very welcoming to families, and there are plenty of family-friendly cafés, lots of things to do and places to play, such as the many beautiful parks in and around Amsterdam.
