Amstelveen

Amstelveen is home to the most international community in the Netherlands. According to the last census, 11% of the population has expat status. That includes many Japanese professionals and their families, but also their British, German, American, and Indian counterparts, as well as those of many other nationalities. Without exception, they have chosen for this part of the Amsterdam Metropolitan Area because of its attractive living and working conditions.

Heart of the Amsterdam Metropolitan Area

Just a few minutes away by car or public transport from cosmopolitan Amsterdam or the dynamic travel hub, Amsterdam Airport Schiphol, Amstelveen nevertheless looks and feels like an oasis of calm, comfort and safety. In leafy Amstelveen, the wide range of available houses and apartments offers relatively more in terms of space and affordability, and local crime and unemployment rates are negligible. In addition, the average resident is highly qualified and earns a higher-than-average salary. For all these reasons, Amstelveen is considered the Netherlands' most socio-economically attractive medium-sized city.

Location location

An equally important location factor for the non-Dutch members of the population, is that nowhere else are there such wide networks and high-quality facilities for foreign professionals (and their families) as there are here.

For example, the several thousand members of the Japanese community can rely on a highly specialised group of commercial services targeted specifically at them. There are schools and restaurants reflecting the educational and culinary heritage of Japan, Japanese-speaking doctors, the local library has its own section of Japanese literature, and there is even a Japanese-speaking fishmonger, who caters to the taste of his fellow countrymen.

While a part of Amstelveen has undoubtedly developed into a piece of Japan on the Amstel, the concentrations of other expat groups ensures that their needs are also increasingly met by a tailored range of cultural and economic services. The growing contingent of Indian Amstelveeners, for example, has its own cricket competition, as well as an established range of restaurants, and an Indian Cultural Centre will soon open its doors. Meanwhile, the Koreans have had their own school for a couple of years now, and so on.

Thanks to the presence of the International School of Amsterdam, there's a choice of many forms of international education in Amstelveen. This private institute for every age group and cultural identity offers curricula that meet the highest educational standards worldwide.

International community

While the lifestyle and atmosphere of Amstelveen are highly attractive to expats and their families, business leaders are just as impressed by all the extras that the city offers as a corporate location.

The combination of good accommodation opportunities, a strategic location in the heart of the Amsterdam Metropolitan Area, excellent accessibility, and the presence of a highly trained, and internationally oriented workforce, mean that Amstelveen has already enjoyed many years as one of the Netherlands' most sought-after locations.

Initially, the foreign arrivals were mainly American and Japanese companies (such as HP, Canon and Ricoh), who were looking for the right base to manage their activities in mainland Europe, and choose Amstelveen as the location for their European head office or sales or distribution office. But nowadays more and more companies (and especially knowledge-intensive businesses) are arriving from the so-called emerging markets, with concrete business plans or requests for information, and a well-equipped network of business service providers is also active here.

They are all warmly welcomed by Amstelveen. Not only are they a major boost to the local economy, but they also contribute to a further broadening of the international orientation. And this is exactly the kind of distinguishing factor that Amstelveen wants to maintain.
