The Amsterdam Light Festival returns to Amsterdam this festive season, (literally) putting the beautiful city centre and its canals in the limelight from 6 December 2013 to 19 January 2014.
Festival of light
Centred on the theme of ‘Building with Light’, the second edition of the event features a canal cruise and walking route taking in this year’s selection of spectacular illuminated artworks. An extensive side programme will also see a host of activities and events take place at museums, theatres, restaurants, shops and other locations in Amsterdam.
Walking route: Illuminade
The Illuminade is a spectacular evening walk through the enchanting Plantage neighbourhood of Amsterdam, where illuminated artworks will be especially installed for the festival. Featuring established names alongside up-and-coming talent in the field, the open-air exhibition is open from 12 December 2013 to 5 January 2013 between 17:00 and 22:00.
Part of the walking route, the Hortus Botanicus is opening their doors for free on each of these evenings, providing the ideal place to pause and pick up a warming mulled wine, hot chocolate or soup. A map of the walking route with information on the featured artworks is available on the Amsterdam Light Festival website.
Amsterdam Light Shopping Night
Another element of the festival sees a host of shops along a town centre route stay open until 22:00 on Saturday, 14 December for the Amsterdam Light Shopping Night. With numerous locations involved along the route (from the Damrak, Nieuwendijk, along the Kalverstraat to the Rokin/Heiligeweg), it’s a great chance to catch up on a spot of late-night Christmas shopping. To add to the festive vibe, shops along the route will be organising special events and warming drinks will be on offer to help keep out the winter chill.
Head to the Amsterdam Light Festival website for more information and the low-down on participating artists.
