Noordpier beach
IJmuiden's beaches are among the most beautiful beaches in the province of Noord-Holland and it is clean and safe here, as evidenced by the blue flag flying here. The beach at the Noordpier (‘North Pier’) is especially favoured by windsurfers and practitioners of watersports due to the exceptional wind and wave flow caused by the Noordpier. On the wide and hard beach there is plenty of surfing and kitesurfing, as well as land sailing and kite buggying. Your kind of thing? There are various schools where you can get lessons on kite-flying, kitesurfing, canoeing or other watersports. You probably won’t master kitesurfing in a day, but everyone can fly kites!
IJmuiderslag beach
With one beach pavilion, the wide IJmuiderslag beach could easily be called quiet, and for that reason it is highly popular with active hikers, nordic walkers and dog owners, because your dog can run free here throughout the year. Zones have also been reserved for kitesurfers. A little bit of wind and those colourful kites create a stunning spectacle.
IJmuiden aan Zee
IJmuiden aan Zee offers everything for a great day of uninterrupted pleasure. A fantastic beach, a convivial boulevard with good restaurants and terraces with a view of the marina. Have the children had enough of digging sand and looking for shells? Then they can work off their excess energy in the trampoline park. If you have young children, the shallow Kennemermeer lake makes a fantastic spot for swimming. And the more daring visitor (adults only!) can venture onto the spectacular 22-metre-high climbing tower under professional supervision. It’ll turn out to be an exciting day after all.
Harbours and locks
IJmuiden is the only gateway to Amsterdam harbour for large seafaring vessels and cruise boats. Gawp at the huge ships, find out how the four locks work and don’t forget to eat a fresh herring. IJmuiden can easily be reached from Amsterdam using the Fast Flying Ferry from Centraal Station. The hydrofoil takes half an hour.
