12 Area 1 iamsterdam.com Oud-West by Marès Kahrel “Oud-West is truly my home. Above all the Vondelpark. It’s lovely lying in the grass with a good book. Or strolling around the terraces, listening to a performance in the open air. By the way, did you know that around 10 million people come to the park every year? Incredible, isn’t it? I recently had friends visiting and I took them to the Hollandsche Manege. It’s the oldest riding school in the Netherlands. I love that atmosphere, with the beautiful ornamentation and the classical balustrades. The Zevenlandenhuizen (‘Seven Countries Houses’) in the Roemer Visscherstraat from 1894 are a surprise; each house in the row represents an architectural style from another European country!”
13 Area 1 iamsterdam.com De Pijp by André Snijder “The Albert Cuypmarkt is brilliant. Nice smelly cheeses and spicy sausage. Olives, fresh fruit, a feast for the senses! I always get my chorizo and chillies there at Chris’s stall. And if you’re after a decent place to eat, from Indonesian to Syrian, from tapas to sushi, then here’s always the right place to be. These days I myself am a regular at Bazar, halfway along the market. This has been a lively neighbourhood since time immemorial, with plenty of students and artists. It’s lovely to just have a wander round, but if you want somewhere to go then head for the Heineken brewery. It’s over 100 years old, and has those gigantic copper brew-kettles. Take a guided tour, and grab a beer in one of the cafés.”
