Logistics
Situated at the heart of Europe, the Amsterdam Area is an important distribution centre and a perfect distribution gateway. The geographical location of the Netherlands makes it ideal for logistical services.
There are many other leading economic centres within a 300-mile radius as well as the necessary modern infrastructure to reach these economic powerhouses and the hinterland far beyond - by air, road, water or rail.
The Amsterdam Area plays a major role in the total logistics supply chain and has the added advantage and synergies of an interconnected Airport-Seaport complex: Amsterdam Airport Schiphol is a major international hub – third largest in Europe in terms of cargo (1.4 million tonnes in 2004) and fourth in passenger numbers (42.5 million in 2004) – and the Port of Amsterdam is an important port complex, the fifth largest in northwestern Europe in terms of transshipment tonnage. Many large international logistics service providers have key operations in this multimodal logistics hub. It plays an important role as a distribution hub and processing facility, thus generating added value.
More than half of all American and Asian logistics centers are located in the Netherlands. To support international business, Amsterdam offers a unique infrastructure. Growth in airborne freight and the high level of service offered by Amsterdam Airport Schiphol have attracted a cluster of high-quality distribution and logistics companies (value-added logistics and supply-chain management), which serve the Amsterdam Area and the rest of Europe.
Companies that have a European Distribution Centre in the Amsterdam Area include: Boeing, Canon, Centocor, DHL, GE Power Systems, Hitachi, Intel, Sigma Coatings, Starbucks and Yamaha.
