The National Maritime Museum

Kattenburgerplein 1
1018 KK AMSTERDAM
Umgebung: Central Station

In 1656 the Amsterdam navy leaders ordered the construction of a large depository. This warehouse served to store sails, ropes, weapons and ammunition. This allowed the navy to prepare a fleet of war vessels without much delay. This 'Zeemagazijn' (Sea Storage) has been the home to The National Maritime Museum since 1973.

Discovery
The National Maritime Museum invites its visitors to explore the ways in which our culture has been shaped by the sea. This can be seen and experienced during the clarifying, stimulating and inspiring exhibitions and performances. Everyone – whether young or old, expert or layperson – will go on a unique journey to discover the maritime past and present of the Netherlands.

After an extensive renovation everybody is welcome again in the Maritime Museum. The building has been completely restored and modernised. The courtyard is now covered by a glass roof. The Open Pleyn allows you to easily find your way to the exhibitions, attractions, the restaurant, the gift shop and the waterside terrace. Naturally, the replica of the Dutch East India Company ship 'Amsterdam' will be lying at the jetty again.
