Onze Lieve Vrouwekerk - Church

Keizersgracht 220
1016 DZ AMSTERDAM
Umgebung: Dam

The Onze Lieve Vrouwe Kerk (Church of our Lady) is also known as the 'Keizersgrachtkerk'. This neo-gothic church was built between 1852 and 1854, and is used for honorary services by the Syrian Orthodox community, the Suriname Roman-Catholic community and the Roman-Catholic community.

Architecture
The architect of the church was Theo Molkenboer, who at the time was the foremost church builder in the north of the Netherlands. The Onze Lieve Vrouwekerk is viewed as his best work and was the First church in which he based the design on a classic gothic construction.

Changing function
As the numbers of Catholics dwindled in Amsterdam, the Onze Lieve Vrouwekerk and its convent were put up for sale. The church was purchased by the Syrian Orthodox Church in 1985. As the church interior meets with the Syrian Orthodox liturgy, the interior of the church remained intact.
